Password Safety

Tips to Create Strong Passwords

  • Passwords should be at least 16 characters
  • Passwords should be unique, NEVER reuse passwords
  • Passwords should be complex
  • Passwords should contain upper and lower case letters, numbers, special characters, and spaces

Use a Password Manager

A password manager can also help you keep track of your passwords. They can also help with alerting you of duplicate passwords, generating strong passwords. Some can also automatically fill your login credentials into website to make sign-in easy.

Encryption ensures that password managers never "know" what your passwords are, keeping them safe from cyber attacks.

Multifactor Authentication (MFA)

MFA Types

Multifactor Authentication can be in various formats such as a code sent to your phone or email, an authenticator app, a security key, and even biometrics (fingerprints, facial recognition, etc.)

Where to Use MFA?

You should use Multifactor Authentication whenever possible but especially for accounts with financial information, such as online stores or bank websites. It is also a good idea to use MFA on accounts with personal information such as social media accounts and email accounts.

Recognize and Report Phishing

Phishing Red Flags

  • An urgent tone (e.g. "Click now or your account closes").
  • Mispelled words, bad grammar
  • Requests to send personal information
  • Sender email address doesn't match company it is sent from. (e.g. Amazon.com vs Amaz0n.com)
  • An email you weren't expecting

What to do?

If you suspect a phishing attempt, it's wise to verify before clicking any links. Contact the person directly if you know them, or report it to your IT department or email/phone provider for assistance.

When unsure, avoid clicking links or sharing personal information. If confirmed as phishing, delete the message promptly.

  • Look in your phone, browser, or app settings.
  • Check the upper corner of your browser for any alerts.
